KENNETH RILEY, VICTORIO oil on canvas
32 x 40 in
Victorio (Bidu-ya, Beduiat; ca. 1825-October 14, 1880) The warrior Victorio, one of the greatest Apache military strategists of all time.Born in New Mexico around 1809, Victorio grew up during a period of intense hostility between the native Apache Native Americans of the southwest and encroaching Mexican and American settlers. Determined to resist the loss of his homeland, Victorio began leading his small band of warriors on a long series of devastating raids against Mexican and American settlers and their communities in the 1850s.After more than a decade of evading the best efforts of the Mexican and American armies to capture him, the U.S. Army managed to convince Victorio to accept resettlement of his people on an inhospitable patch of sunburnt land near San Carlos, Arizona, in 1869. But with summer temperatures reaching 110 degrees on the San Carlos reservation (an area also known as Hell's Forty Acres) and farming nearly impossible, Victorio decided the new reservation was unacceptable and moved his followers to more pleasant grounds at Ojo Caliente (Warm Springs), thus again becoming an outlaw in the eyes of the United States. In 1878, the U.S. Army attempted to force the Apaches back to the San Carlos reservation, but Victorio eluded capture, disappearing into the desert with 150 braves. Surviving by raiding the towns and farms of Chihuahua, Mexico, Victorio and his men began to ambush U.S. troops as well as Mexican or American sheepherders. In 1880, a combined force of U.S. and Mexican troops finally succeeded in tracking down Apache and his warriors, surrounding them in the Tres Castillos Mountains of Mexico, just south of El Paso, Texas. Having sent the American troops away, the Mexican soldiers proceeded to kill all but 17 of the trapped Apaches, though the exact manner of Victorio's death remains unclear. Some claimed a Native American scout employed by the Mexican army killed the famous warrior. But according to the Apache, Victorio took his own life rather than surrender to the Mexicans. Regardless of how it happened, Victorio's death made him a martyr to the Apache people and strengthened the resolve of other warriors to continue the fight. The last of the great Apache warriors, Geronimo, would not surrender until 1886.

- TWO (2) AMERICANA BOOKS OF THE OLD WESTOffered
TWO (2) AMERICANA BOOKS OF THE OLD WESTOffered in this lot are two (2) Books of the Old West, "On The Border With Crook" by John C. Bourke and "Owyhee Cattlemen 1878 1978 100 Years In The Saddle" by Mildretta Adams. "On the Border with Crook" has long been regarded as one of the best firsthand accounts of frontier army life. More than simply an account of General Crook, Bourke writes with unparalleled detail of the landscape of the Southwest, impressions on the forts and communities in Arizona Territory, and the hardships of frontier service, in addition to the exciting and honest accounts of combat. What is most impressive about Bourke’s work is the equal time he gives to both soldier and Native American alike, making "On the Border with Crook" the essential book for those interested in the history of the American frontier. Originally written in 1891, after serving over fifteen years (1870-1886) with General George Crook, Bourke sat down to write this memoir of his hero. He brings to life the frontier, the plains, and the Southwest as well as Native American heroes Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, and Geronimo. Far more than a first-hand account of Crook's campaigns during the Plains Indian wars and in the Southwest. Alert, curious, and perceptive, Bourke brings to life the whole frontier scene. In crisp descriptions and telling anecdotes he recreates the events and landscapes through which he moved; he sketches sharp action-pictures not only of Crook and his fellow cavalrymen. Perhaps most important, Bourke shows us how General Crook was able to achieve his most remarkable victory—how this man of war won and deserved the trust of the tribes he had subjugated. "Owyhee Cattlemen 1878 1978 100 Years In The Saddle" chronicles the first hundred years of existence for the Owyhee Cattlemen's Association, the oldest such group in Idaho and one of the oldest in the entire United States. Formed in 1878 to protect Owyhee Mountain ranchers against warring Bannock Indians. This book also chronicles the first one hundred years of settlers to the area initially arriving due to the mining boom of the latter 19th century that dominated Idaho Territory. Silver City and Ruby City developed as boom towns. At its height in the 1880s, Owyhee County was among the most populous places in Idaho. Today it is among the least populous, at 1.4 persons per square mile. These two books are in good overall condition, "On The Border..." has a stamped gold gilt illustrated hardcover and gold gilt top edge, bottom edge and fore edge pages and measures 5.75"W x 8.5"L. "Owyhee Cattlemen..." measures 8.5"W x 11.5"L

- SIGNED LEONARD BASKIN MONOTYPE - "GERONIMO"
SIGNED LEONARD BASKIN MONOTYPE - "GERONIMO" (1992)Leonard Baskin (American, 1922-2000). "Geronimo" monotype, 1992. Artist's signature, "monotype touched" and title handwritten in pencil beneath image. An impressive hand-colored monotype by legendary artist Leonard Baskin depicting a bust-length portrait of the famous Geronimo - a respected leader, medicine man, and shaman of the Apache people. Leonard Baskin created two series of lithographs that depict 19th century Native Americans, including illustrious individuals such as Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, and Geronimo. His poignant portraits convey these sitters' noble qualities as well as the despair and loss experienced by these people. This project began when Leonard Baskin was asked to illustrate a handbook for Custer National Park (now called Little Big-Horn National Park). Since Baskin actually detested Custer, he instead opted to create portraits of Native American chiefs and leaders that conveyed their bravery and intelligence like this example. Size of sight view: 23.875" L x 17.875" W (60.6 cm x 45.4 cm) Size of frame: 31.5" L x 25.5" W (80 cm x 64.8 cm)
Leonard Baskin was a creative force for more than 5 decades and worked in a variety of media; however, he is best known for sizeable works on paper like this example. "Geronimo" is rendered in Baskin's characteristically expressive manner and grand scale. It is among Baskin's figurative prints that rivaled the works of Abstract Expressionists during his day, set in a custom frame and hand signed.
Baskin was a 20th century "Renaissance Man" - a highly respected sculptor, printmaker, writer, and watercolorist. His prints included mythological, classical, and biblical scenes as well as portraits and floral studies. Baskin studied at Yale University from 1941 to 1943 and received his B.A. at the New School for Social Research in 1949. He also founded Gehenna Press which specialized in fine book production and taught printmaking and sculpture at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts as well as Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts from 1953 until 1974. Baskin's artworks are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Vatican Museum, the Smithsonian Institute, the Tate Gallery in London, and other elite institutions. "Angel of Death" has been collected by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art among others (accession numbers 1971.300, 1971.25, and 1961-157-4 respectively). His noted public sculptural commissions include pieces for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial as well as the Holocaust Memorial in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Baskin also received many prestigious honors, such as a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Gold Medal of the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Jewish Cultural Achievement Award. He was also honored with numerous retrospective exhibitions at institutions including the Smithsonian Museum, the Albertina Museum, and the Library of Congress.

- SIGNED SUSAN KLIEWER BRONZE "GERONIMO"
SIGNED SUSAN KLIEWER BRONZE "GERONIMO" (2005)Susan Kliewer (American, b. 1940). "Geronimo" bronze, 2005. Edition 25 of 45. Signed and numbered on back of terrain below the horse and rider. A magnificent limited edition cast bronze sculpture of Geronimo, the legendary Apache leader, by Susan Kliewer, one of the Southwest's most acclaimed sculptors. Kliewer presents Geronimo on horseback, dynamically turning backward to gaze behind him while holding the reins of his galloping steed in one hand and an intimidating rifle in the other. The finely modeled and colorful patinated details of Geronimo's clothing and accoutrements, the horse's mane, coat, and bridle as well as the flowering cactus and desert plants are quite impressive. Kliewer also meticulously rendered with craggy terrain below with prickly cactus and uneven ground. What's more, the statue is mounted on a tiered wooden pedestal that rotates so that one may admire it from all angles. Size: 15.5" W x 17.25" H (39.4 cm x 43.8 cm); 19" H (48.3 cm) on included custom stand.
This piece was acquired from the Mountain Trails Gallery in Sedona and was accompanied by the following contextual description, "A famed Apache Medicine Man, warrior, seer, and spiritual leader, Geronimo has become an American legend. He was single-minded in his determination to preserve his people's land and culture through any means necessary."
A native of Southern California, Susan Kliewer has lived in Arizona for 40 years, with 5 of those years at the Marble Canyon Trading Post adjacent to the Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona. Kliewer started painting when she was 10 years old and took up sculpture in 1987 after working at a foundry for 10 years. In 1993, Kliewer won a competition to create a monument of Sedona Schnebly. In addition, she created a life-size fountain that portrays the Sinagua people as well as a fountain of a Hopi Water Maiden in Sedona. In her words, "My work aims to show the common thread that underlies all human experience, and which, I hope, brings us to a greater understanding between peoples."

- ALLAN HOUSER, AMERICAN (1914-1994),
ALLAN HOUSER, AMERICAN (1914-1994), HEAD OF A WOMAN, 1993, BRONZE, 14" H X 6 1/2" WAllan Houser, American, (1914-1994) Head of a Woman, 1993, bronze Signed, titled, dated, and numbered 7/20. Biography from the Archives of Askart: Born on the family farm near in Apache, Oklahoma, Allan Houser became one of the Southwest's most famous and financially successful twentieth-century sculptors, known for his abstract Indian subjects. In his book, Masters of American Sculptors, Donald Martin Reynolds referred to Houser, who was Chiricahua Apache, as the "patriarch of American Indian sculptors. . . .Through his prodigious output and a generation of students and followers, Houser has been a formidable force in shaping contemporary Indian sculpture". (205). In 1993, the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, opened a sculpture garden in his honor. With close ties to Arizona, Houser was the grandson of the chief who served as Geronimo's interpreter and a great nephew of the Apache Chief, Geronimo. Houser had the Apache name of "Haozous", translated in English as 'The Sound of Pulling Roots'. At age 15, in 1929, he left high school to help his father run the farm, but five years later enrolled in the Santa Fe Indian Art School founded by Dorothy Dunn. He said because it was free, it was the only art school an Indian could afford. His family were farmers, and he could only go to school when he wasn't needed at home for farm labor. However, his talent was soon recognized, and the first year of his enrollment he was named the school's outstanding artist. He also studied mural painting with Olaf Nordmark at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and he began his art career as a muralist and painter and then focused on stone and wood carving and sculpting in steel and bronze. He worked in Santa Fe from 1936 to 1938, the only Indian specializing in sculpture, and he also painted murals in Washington D.C for the Department of the Interior; Fort Sill, Arkansas; and Riverside, California. As a painter, he did the official portrait of Stuart Udall, Secretary of the Interior and Apache Chief Geronimo for the Arizona State Capitol Building in Phoenix. During World War II, he was a factory hand and ditch digger in California. In 1948, he won a scholarship to the Haskell Institute in Kansas, followed by a Guggenheim Fellowship. There he did his first large sculpture, Comrades in Mourning. Carved from marble, it is eight-feet tall and weighs four and a half tons and remains at the Institute. From 1951 to 1975, he taught art in Indian Schools, and also served as instructor at the Institute of American Arts. From 1962, he lived in Santa Fe from where his work was collected all over the United States. The Phoenician Hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona, has one of the largest collections of his sculpture.
